Escuela De Las Artes

Intensive Pottery Workshops Featuring
Internationally Renowned Potter Juan Quezada

Inspired by prehistoric shards of pottery that he found while he was a small child gathering wood, Juan Quezada redeveloped an ancient pottery technique. Using only clays and natural paints native to the area, he has begun a remarkable ceramic arts tradition and revival in Mata Ortiz.

Under the tutelage of Juan Quezada and his sons you will create your own pottery using the same techniques as the ancient Paquime Indians. Learn this unique "single coil" method from the master. You will be instructed in all aspects -- from finding/processing the required raw materials to making all of the required tools including wonderful paint brushes that you will craft using human hair and finally to firing your pots using "buñigas" for fuel.

Visit the ancient ruins at the museum in Casas Grandes as well as several of the other Paquime ruins that dot the countryside of Northern Mexico. You'll hike to areas where you can see ancient pictographs, and petroglyphs and La Cueva de la Olla (the Cave of the Pot). Spend 8 days at the remote and rustic Rancho Sierra Madre where beautiful landscape surrounds you. Explore the canyons and countryside in your leisure time.

Take hikes along the river and trips to fire agate mines where you'll be able to spend some time rock hounding. See and experience the relaxation of life untouched by telephone, electricity or Internet. Emergency radio contact is available.

Full information will be provided when the class is filled and all monies are collected. Class is limited to 14 spaces and will be filled on a first come first served basis. The class is popular and fills quickly. To insure your spot, everyone is encouraged to contact us regarding fees and deposit immediately.
